LASIK for Young Adults - Is it Worth It?

LASIK surgery in Destin is one of the most sought after eye procedures among middle aged adults and older adults in the area because of the efficient and excellent results. LASIK requires an eye examination for every patient, ensuring that there are no existing conditions that could affect the outcome of the procedure. One of the factors assessed by Dr. Charles Williamson, ophthalmologist at Wells Vision and Laser Eye Center, is the patient’s age. The patients must be 18 years and above to qualify as a candidate for LASIK surgery.

Since people who qualify for LASIK include mostly millennials, many are curious if there are any differences if the surgery is done in early adulthood than having it as a middle aged adult. Through a

, candidacy for LASIK would be determined and any contraindications would be detected. The question that young adults pose today is: is it worth it to undergo LASIK at our age?

Eye strain is a common discomfort for working people, especially the millennials, because they work more closely with computers and modern technology. Many would not take a second look at LASIK surgery in Florida because their eyesight seems okay for now. However, our eyesight may degrade as time passes by, and investing in vision correction at an early age would save a lot of money in the long run. LASIK is the answer to young adult’s queries on refractive errors, and they would surely enjoy their day to day activities minus their contact lenses and eyeglasses.

A lot of millennials are health buffs and fitness enthusiasts, yet one could not enjoy sports and other physical fitness activities if they are more afraid of losing their contact lenses or breaking their glasses. Investing in LASIK would mean that you can work out or play sports even without your contacts or glasses, removing a big hassle from your active lifestyle.

Technology has managed to improve LASIK even more, creating a safe and trusted refractive laser eye surgery for the people of Emerald Coast. The risks were reduced, and benefits of LASIK are adding up as the procedure continues to become a popular eye procedure. While contact lenses could cause dry eyes, infection, and allergies and glasses could limit your ability to keep up with an active lifestyle, LASIK could remove all these worries for you in just a few minutes of surgery.

Contact lenses and eyeglasses need to be updated every now and then, which could cost a lot if you add them all up. Many think that undergoing LASIK is expensive, yet when you look at the long term situation, LASIK is just a one-time cost while contacts and glasses would need to be checked and replaced every three months or so. Investing in LASIK could save you loads of money that you can use on your other needs and make you enjoy your life even more.

Young adults have access to everything, especially to improving their health. Age may be just a number, but our eyes need to be taken care of meticulously to fully enjoy the beauty of life. It is high time to squash these myths and pave the way toward clear vision through LASIK surgery in Florida.

           Myth 1: LASIK is painful.

ILASIK at Wells Vision offers a completely painless, bladeless LASIK experience. Your Wells Vision surgeon will place antiseptic eye drops to numb your eyes. The only discomfort you may feel will be a slight pressure on your eye during the initial stages of the procedure. The iLASIK combines WaveScan technology, an IntraLase femtosecond laser, and an Advanced CustomVue excimer laser to create a more effective and efficient LASIK surgery than ever before. Through these state-of-the-art, modern technologies, the patient is assured of a safer and absolutely painless LASIK procedure.

Myth 2: LASIK is a new procedure, so the side effects are not yet known.

LASIK surgery was introduced during the early 1980s. The first procedure was performed in 1987. LASIK surgery and its technologies have continually improved throughout the years, today allowing us a more effective and reliable laser vision correction procedure. There are no reported long-term effects on patients who have undergone LASIK.

LASIK surgeons in Emerald Coast are proud to use the newest technology LASIK can provide. The iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser provides exceptional safety. The software design of iFS lets surgeons create a more customized corneal flap, leading to less disruption of the corneal structure, less flap edema, and less inflammation due to a lower energy emitted per pulse. Through these advanced softwares, side effects that were once common are now, essentially, a rarity.

Myth 3: Throw ‘em away - you do not need eyeglasses or contact lenses at all after undergoing LASIK.

Yes and no. Despite having LASIK surgery, tasks such as driving at night would still require the use of eyeglasses for some LASIK patients. This is especially true for older adults, who would most likely still need glasses during reading fine print or sewing. The Abbott VISX S4 with Iris Registration gives a higher level of alignment accuracy during surgery and has multiple features that increases the quality of your LASIK surgery, leading to a more favorable result.

Myth 4: Any doctor can perform LASIK surgery.

LASIK is a delicate procedure and should be handled only by a surgeon who has the skill and expertise in the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Williamson incorporates the highest levels of technology for his LASIK procedure. The iFS laser has proven that it can speed up recovery stages and reduce or even eliminate complications. Only a surgeon who is well-versed in this kind of advanced LASIK technology could perform a flawless surgery, the peak of the latest LASIK solution.

Myth 5: Anyone can undergo LASIK.

Dr. Kevin Wells performs eye exams at Wells Vision Center to determine candidacy for LASIK. There are qualifications for undergoing LASIK surgery, so not everyone who wants to have it can undergo it. The targets of LASIK have broadened, however, due to the advent of iLASIK. iLASIK’s inclusiveness makes the surgery safer for patients who were previously not LASIK candidates.

LASIK for Athletes: Winning the Battle Against Poor Vision

Doing your favorite activity with visual limitations can be frustrating, even more so if you are an athlete. An athlete’s vision is one of the most important tools for their performance. However, athletes with eye disorders usually need glasses or lenses to actively participate on the field or court. Depending on your prescription, playing without glasses could significantly decrease your ability to perform your best, and playing with them on causes distractions and a potentially expensive drop! Contact lenses become an annoyance, too, with the addition of dirt and sweat. While glasses and contact lenses have been the safest choice for years, they have been proven ineffective and inconvenient for athletes overtime. because of their fast-paced, active lifestyle. However, the specific sport one plays has significance weight in eligibility. Most doctors warn their clients about the complications after getting LASIK because contact sports will always have a higher risk of eye injury. These patients must also be willing to take downtime from playing their sport post-surgery to allow for ample recovery time. This recovery period varies patient to patient, with some patients needing just 2 days while others need 2 weeks. Still, the interruption could be seen as a deal-breaker by some, specifically by athletes who train year-round.

As stated, the degree of risk in LASIK surgery depends on what type of sport an athlete plays. Some are at higher risk if they play contact sports including basketball, wrestling or boxing. Athletes who play non- or low-contact sports like baseball or tennis are at a much lower risk. The main concern of LASIK is the healing of the corneal flap that is created during surgery. If the eyes were to be injured while the eye is not fully healed, it can cause corneal re-opening, leading to potentially serious damage. Accumulation of sweat and dirt during play can also lead to irritation, causing infection that could hinder the eye’s healing process.

There will be certain precautions in having LASIK Surgery. The most important part in having a successful surgery is the healing process which includes protecting the eyes. Most doctors would recommend athletes in minimizing their strenuous activities for a reasonable amount of time after undergoing LASIK. A limited amount of training is usually allowed in the early healing process but also varies with the sport and the actual procedure that was performed. Following of the doctor’s instruction for post-op LASIK care can really prevent and avoid the complications of LASIK. The doctor would usually order you to rest for a week or two, restrict your training and competition, but the benefits that you will reap can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

Mere decades ago, if you were one of millions of Americans who had to endure the news of never again having 20/20 vision without the use of eyeglasses, the future seemed burdensome. Add another task to your morning routine; another item to the top of your mental checklist before starting your day (does “keys, wallet, glasses” ring a bell?)

           How LASIK Works

LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea using an excimer laser. During LASIK eye surgery, the surgeon first administers numbing drops, which take effect in 10-15 minutes, and then creates a thin, corneal flap with the laser. The surgeon then pulls back the flap to expose the underlying tissue and reshapes the stroma layer of the cornea. Then, the laser removes cells according to your prescription. When the treatment is completed, the surgeon repositions and closes the flap.

           Why Flap Thickness Matters

In LASIK surgery, the creation of the first corneal is crucial for predicting post-surgery outcome. Choosing to cut a thin flap has been a popular choice recently but essentially holds the same purpose as cutting a thicker flap. So, does flap thickness really matter? Though what constitutes a “thin flap” differs from surgeon to surgeon, most would agree that a 130 microns or less is thin.

Most surgeons prefer using a femtosecond laser over the traditional blade-based LASIK because the former can achieve flaps that are an average thickness of 110 microns, while the latter usually achieves a thickness of 180 microns.

The benefits of a thinner corneal flap include:

            Faster visual recovery,

            Higher retinal image quality

            And shorter treatment times

The advantages of femtosecond lasers include reduced incidence of flap complications like buttonholes and free caps, greater surgeon choice and greater control over flap diameter and thickness, absence of moving parts, capability of cutting thinner flaps with increased precision and most of all, improved safety.

Using LASIK that promotes thin flaps preserves the Bowman’s membrane and the excimer treatment is concentrated the anterior cornea where the lamellae are mostly densely packed. These are positive factors that prevent post-LASIK ectasia and eliminate post-haze complications.

Here are 5 dietary guidelines you should consider implementing into your own daily diet:

Make sure the fats you are ingesting are the health variety.

The omega-3 fatty acids found in different types of fish, canola oil and walnuts have been known to help prevent dry eyes and it is even suggested by some eye care professionals that perform regular eye exams that it can help reduce your risk of developing cataracts later in life.

Grab a bowl of cereal and whole grains every once in a while.

When deciding what kind of bread and cereal you want to eat, make sure that it is 100 percent whole-grain with a ton of fiber! Fiber helps to fight dangerous sugars and starches that might increase your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. As an added benefit fiber gives you that full feeling for an extended period of time which helps you cut down on some of those pesky calories you’ve been trying to burn off.

            Make sure to hydrate!

Dry eye is something that eye doctors look out for in eye exams so make sure to drink plenty of water, low-fat dairy milk and nutritious fruit and vegetable juices. Juice can be tricky because there are a lot of juices that contain high amounts of sugar which isn’t good for you eye health, so make sure to only drink juices that are labeled at being made of 100% vegetable and/or fruit. If you hydrate properly it is said to help reduce symptoms of dry eye such as irritation.

            Go PRO with PROtein.

Meat is a great source of protein, but the cut of meat and the cooking method are the defining factor whether the meat in question will help or hurt your eye nutrition. Generally speaking, it is recommended that you ingest lean meats and other less fatty cuts of meat. The fats in red meat are saturated fats which are considered to be unhealthy for your eyes and potentially increase your risk of developing macular degeneration. Nuts, fish, legumes and eggs are considered to be great healthy sources of protein as well.

Avoid consuming high levels of sodium.

Diets that are high in sodium are not only considered to have an effect on your heart but also increases your risk of developing cataracts. It is recommended that you keep your sodium intake below 2,000 mg per day, so make sure to read the labels on pre-packaged and canned foods as they tend to be high in sodium compared to fresh and frozen foods.

Diet alone won’t be enough to keep your vision protected throughout your life, but it is an important piece of the eye health puzzle. No matter what you, do you should always schedule routine eye exams with Wells Vision and Laser Eye Center to ensure your eyes are performing at their optimal levels. Only eye exams by trained eye doctors can properly detect eye problems early before they become a major issue.

Probably the most popular of the 4 in this list, spinach is a common ingredient in many people’s diets. It is most commonly used in salads, but is also a great addition to snack dips, sauces, and soups. You may not know that spinach has a lot of different vitamins and nutrients such as: vitamin A, B-complex, C and K, as well as zeaxanthin beta-carotene, lutein, potassium manganese, copper, zinc and magnesium.

            Watercress:

In the same plant family as arugula and kale, watercress contains a long list of vitamins and nutrients such as: vitamins A, B6, B12, C, K, iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Watercress has the highest levels of nutrients for the lowest amount of calories of any vegetable. Watercress has been known to help fight age-related macular degeneration.

            Kale:

In the same plant family as mustard and cabbage, kale actually has more nutritional value than spinach. Like the other 3 leafy greens, kale has a long list of vitamins and nutrients including: lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin B-complex, copper, beta-carotene, calcium, sodium, potassium, manganese, iron and phosphorus. 1 cup of Kale has approximately 670% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin A, 1200% of the RDA of vitamin K, and another 400% of the RDA of vitamin C.

Kale has grown in popularity in recent years, because of its incredible nutritional value. Because of the high concentrations of lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and vitamin A, kale helps to keep your retina healthy. Eating kale can help to protect your retina from blue and ultraviolet light, and the help to stop age-related macular degeneration. Eating kale also has a positive effect on diabetes, which helps to reduce your risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Instead of grabbing those potato chips, consider picking up some kale chips instead and help to protect your vision.

Thankfully, today we have devised some ways to help reduce your risks of developing this debilitating eye condition. Here are 5 Things You Can Do To Protect Your Vision From Macular Degeneration:

           1. Know your family’s medical history:

If you discover that a close relative has AMD, then your risks of developing this eye condition increase drastically to a 50% chance. Knowing this information allows for you to schedule eye exams accordingly. Catching AMD early is essential in regards to protecting your vision. We aren't able to cure AMD yet, but catching it early allows for us to potentially slow down the vision loss.

           2. Put down those cigarettes:

A large amount of studies suggest that smoking increases your risk of developing AMD. Smoking has also been known to speed up your rate of vision loss should you be diagnosed with it. Smokers are considered to be twice as likely to develop AMD, then those who do not smoke.

           3. Get into fitness:

There are plenty of studies out there that suggest that exercising regularly helps to improve your eye health. Some studies even suggest that exercising three times a week can reduced your risks of developing more serious forms of AMD by as much as 70 percent.

           4. Eat a balanced, nutrient rich diet:

Eating a diet that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, but low in saturated fat and cholesterol is ideal for your eyes. Studies have shown that people who eat diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids have reduced risks of developing AMD. Little tip—fish is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids.

           5. Schedule regular eye exams:

In the early stages of AMD, most people aren't going to see obvious symptoms with their vision. Having regular eye exams with your eye doctor is essential in catching AMD early, as only an eye doctor can detect symptoms in the early stages.

Think back to the moment when your eye doctor first told you that your vision was not 20/20 and you needed glasses. For most people, this moment was not a happy moment, but a moment of panic. For years’ glasses have carried with them an unfortunate social stigma—phrases like “four eyes” come to mind. If you use glasses today, then you might be due for an upgrade.

Thanks to many advances in technology LASIK has become safer and more accessible than ever. Here are 3 reasons you should consider ditching your glasses:

1.Glasses carry with them a certain level of inconvenience. Depending on the severity of your visual impairment finding your glasses in the morning on your night stand might be quite difficult. Who wants to have to fumble around to put your eyes on in the morning? The other issue with glasses is they get dirty easy, so throughout the day you might have to wash your glasses 2-3 times depending on the type of lifestyle you live. Protecting your vision from harmful UV rays proves to be a challenge as well. You can choose to invest another $200 - $400 on prescription sunglasses, spend a small fortune on transition lenses, or purchase cheap hideously ugly clip on shares which scratch your expensive glasses frames up. None of these options are ideal, and it would be best to just avoid them all.

Going to the theater for a nice 3D movie experience can be difficult as well when you have glasses because the 3D glasses never fit very comfortably over your glasses and normally cause your ears to be sore by the end of the cinema experience. The 3D glasses can also scratch up your lenses and frames.

2.If you wear glasses, then you must be tired of having to update your prescription every other year. Glasses are expensive and having to regularly buy a new pair or two ends up being an expensive endeavor throughout your life. You aren't left with many options either, if you choose to ignore your changing glasses prescription then you might as well not wear glasses at all because you won't be seeing as clearly as you could be and you could experience recurring headaches. Even if you are in the habit of upgrading your prescription when necessary, you might still get headaches each time you start wearing those new prescription lenses.

3.Your wallet might cry a little. Shopping for glasses can be fun, but as soon as it becomes time to cash out reality sinks in, and you realize that you are about to spend a small fortune on an item that will probably only last you two years’ maximum. LASIK might seem like a more expensive procedure, but when you compare it to a lifetime of glasses there is actually quite a large amount of savings.

Don't let glasses drag your lifestyle down, get the most out of life with your own two eyes and choose LASIK. Choosing LASIK means complete visual freedom to see what you want to see without the need for expensive lenses that can be easily damages or lost. Come see us today and ask one of our experts if LASIK is the right choice for you.

Yes, maybe it is a little early to be talking about summer, but it is a good idea to plan things out beforehand so you can maximize the beautiful summer weather. Studies show that fewer people choose to undergo laser eye surgery during the summer than during any other season. The reason behind this is that people’s schedules get busy with vacations, beach days, gardening, and other outdoor activities with friends and family. Before you make those summer plans you should plan a step further and consider getting LASIK now so that your summer can remain nice and open for you to enjoy.

Here are 3 Reasons Why You Should Prepare For Summer With LASIK:

           1. The Freedom of Clear Vision Without Corrective Lenses:

During the summer you are going to want to be active and outdoors enjoying that gorgeous weather. From traveling to playing Frisbee in your back yard you aren't going to want to have to deal with the frustration of losing your glasses or having your contact lenses pop out. Feel free with LASIK.

           2. Feel Safer When You Travel:

Being able to see the world around you clearly with your own two eyes does a lot to help you feel safer, particularly if you are in a new place you have never been before. If you are virtually blind without your corrective lenses, you might want to seriously consider LASIK for your own personal safety while you travel.

           3. Be In Style:

While there is such a thing as prescription sun glasses, it limits your options quite a bit! If you undergo LASIK surgery, then you will be able to pick up any pair of shares you want. Who doesn't enjoy having their sunglasses complimented?

Perfect vision can now be yours without the need for glasses or contacts thanks to LASIK eye surgery performed by a trained ophthalmologist. Still need convincing? Well here are the Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Have LASIK Eye Surgery:

           1. Saves You Money:

LASIK might seem expensive on the surface, but it actually saves you quite a bit of money throughout your life! If you were to sit down and calculate the total expenses of your annual spending on glasses and/or contacts, you would find that the LASIK surgery would pay for itself in no time. Some insurance companies might also be willing to help you pay for a portion of the costs of LASIK. Flex Spending Account (FSA) funds can be used most of the time to help pay for these costs as well.

           2. Able To Enjoy Playing Sports:

Let’s face it, if you have to wear contacts or glasses it takes a lot of the fun out of playing sports. Having to worry about your contacts or glasses falling off actually prevents you from performing at an optimal competitive level as well. Athletes who have received LASIK have seen improvement in their game once that concern is removed.

           3. Less Chance Of Eye Infection:

One of the most common reasons people end up visiting the eye doctor is because they got an eye infection from their contact lenses. If you aren't taking the proper hygienic precautions with your contact lenses, your risk of infection is highly elevated. Glasses can also cause eye infections if you don't clean them regularly. LASIK can help remove this added risk from infection because you won't need to worry about taking your lenses out and cleaning your glasses.

           4. Comfort Level:

If you are a glasses or contacts user then you know about the discomfort that comes with it. New glasses prescriptions can cause headaches, and they always press down on your nose and ears. Contact lenses can make your eyes dry and feel sore over time and who wants to have to stick their fingers into their eyes every day? I know I don't! Once you get LASIK then you can kiss this frustration and discomfort goodbye!

           5. The Best Vision Possible:

In most cases, LASIK provides better vision correction than contacts and lenses. The reason this is possible is that, when performing LASIK surgery, the eye doctor is able to make tiny adjustments to your eye that are just not possible with a prescription lens.
